We know first-hand the reality of the Peruvian Amazon through field visits in Tres Unidos and at the Chaikuni Center (Iquitos), where we collected community testimonies, as well as through an approach to the Belén market.

Born in 1951, Tres Unidos takes its name from three families from San Juan who settled on the banks of the Río Nanay. Today, cassava carries the local economy. The primary school has few pupils and no secondary level—young people must travel to Iquitos.

Accessible via the Río Nanay, San Pablo de Cuyana has a school, health post, and chapel at the heart of the village. Its communal leader told us about the Qali Warma program: in the rain, on muddy ground, transporting hot meals to the school led to accidents.

Mercado de Belén is the largest market in Loreto. Every day, riverside communities sell fish and local foods there, alongside industrial products and traditional remedies. On the ground, you see local food and urban supply chains coexist and clash.
